Job Description

The Quality Assurance Manager provides leadership and management in all areas of the Quality Assurance department and facilitates relationships in the sales / customer arena. This role is accountable for department goals relating to Safety, Quality, Cost, Environmental Compliance, and Production. The Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for the performance of the lab personnel assigned to the area, including the Engineers, Supervisors, and the hourly Employees on the shift. The ideal candidate will be technically oriented, detailed in approach, work well with people at all levels in the organization, drive improvement initiatives and actions, and promotable to management positions in the company after building background and experience in our business.

Reports to the following: (1) Business Unit Manager – Manufacturing Excellence

Daily Accountabilities:

  • Directly accountable for the performance of the area and the Employees attached to the area in meeting goals for Safety, Quality, Cost, Environmental Compliance, and Production. Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and make decisions to meet daily production needs.
  • Manages compliance to ISO standards, HACCP, FSSC standards.
  • Monitors and manages the development of the Employees in the area.
  • Responsible for setting direction, identifying priorities, coordinating the activities of other departments as it relates to the area performance, ISO quality system, HACCP and FSSC standards,and managing the operating budget for the area.
  • Addresses issues impacting performance expeditiously getting outside resources involved as needed.
  • Communicates to all levels of the organization as needed and participates with Area Managers from other areas of the mill to coordinate activities.
  • Administers policy and procedure within legal guidelines. Coaches work group to adapt to new ways of performing work to include understanding of legal ramifications of our policies, government regulations, safety standards, and consistently adhering to and administering policy and procedures.
  • Manage costs by tracking costs using monthly reports. Provide input into projected plans. Conduct cost analysis. Use cost factors to effectively make sound decisions as well as identifying gaps.
  • Schedules work for the daily activities of the work groups to maximize available resources.



Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills. Clear expression of ideas in writing and in good grammatical form. Has the ability to actively listen and provide feedback to others.

Conflict Resolution:

Ability to resolve conflicts/disagreements in such a way to promote a win-win situation with the parties involved. Understands that based on the variety of experiences and values of the work group and work group members. An advisor is very sensitive to the feelings of others as resolutions are collectively developed.


Possesses a genuine intent to foster the learning and development of work group members while promoting the creation of a high performance team. Able to lead work group toward an objective or goal while encouraging and empowering the work group to make decisions regarding flow of work through specified area. Understands one’s influence on the work group, and provides direction to work group to insure requirements are consistently met for the work area/facility. Motivates work group towards goal achievement by insuring that work group understands how their work fits into the entire production flow of the facility and by providing continuous feedback. Assists in driving the work group and others to improvement via Manufacturing Excellence process goals and action items.


Able to effectively use these computer systems: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Demonstrate the ability to learn and understand systems such as PPR, SAP, PI, etc.


Must develop a positive working environment promoting open and honest communications and trust among work group members. Understands in order to provide continuous feedback to work group members, specific behaviors must be described in detail. Listen with the intent to understand the situation, shows empathy, and can express feelings in a very professional manner without offending work group members. Ensures production standards and policies are adhered to and counsels work group members accordingly should deviations exist. Partners with union leadership to work through employee issues.

Problem Solving:

Ability to understand a situation by breaking it apart into smaller pieces, organizing parts of problem in a systematic way, making systematic comparisons of different aspects or features, setting priorities on a rational basis, identifying time sequences, and casual relationships or other relationships, in order to generate solutions. Trains and leads work group in problem solving activities.

Change Orientation:

Ability to adapt to and work in a variety of situations to support the organizational goals and customer needs. Appreciates new and different perspectives and has the willingness to align one’s own behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of Evergreen Packaging.


Ability to effectively forecast future production/operational demands and to insure a plan of action is developed to support the attainment of organizational goals. Involves assessing capabilities, identifying resources, setting and prioritizing objectives, and determining critical paths. Ensures resources are available for work group to produce on-time, quality work and in a safe manner.



  • Undergraduate Degree required from a State Board of Regents Accredited University
  • 5-7 years professional work experience in Leadership/Supervisory role.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions and technical challenges.
  • Ability to build and manage a budget and schedule.
  • Good communication & computer skills in Microsoft Office. PI, Elixir, and other programs are a benefit
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization in a team setting.
  • Organized approach to work and ability to deal with multiple competing priorities to make appropriate decisions.
  • Able to convey a sense of urgency and drive to perform and deliver expected results to the organization.
  • Support staff to incorporate ideas for the Lean implementation
  • Facilitate Lean culture throughout the Quality department
  • Displayed potential to grasp strategic concepts and strategy


  • Exposure to LEAN ideologies.
  • Certification Lean Manufacturing (Green or Black Belt)
  • Technical degree that has application to the paper industry.
  • Experience managing people in a union environment.
  • High leadership potential with the ability and the desire to be promoted in the organization.
