Job Description

The Area Manager - Utilities is responsible for production, safety, quality, maintenance coordination, area budgets and environmental compliance for the recovery and utility areas. Recovery & Utilities includes two recovery boilers, two lime kilns, causticizing, black liquor evaporators, bark boiler, four coal fired boilers, coal systems, power generation, mill air system and influent water treatment. The successful candidate will supervise and mentor the Recovery Area Manager, Operations & Maintenance Coordinators and Process Supervisors assigned to the Recovery & Utilities areas and will be an active contributor to the coordination of all Utility and Recovery area activities.

Specific Job Duties:

  • Responsible for safety systems and environmental compliance. 
  • Coordinate with the Recovery Area Manager to ensure that process supervisors are achieving daily performance requirements with their shifts.
  • Manage the business using department goals.
  • Coordinate with the Utility area to ensure department requirements are meet.
  • Manage cost effectively while making sound decisions.
  • Use manufacturing excellence strategies to proactively seek continuous improvements in operations and cost.
  • Participate with Triangle Teams to ensure that maintenance work is prioritized properly.
  • Ensure that all boilers meet all applicable insurance regulations, codes, etc.
  • Provide oversight to absenteeism, vacations, work schedules, etc.
  • Supervise employee discipline as delegated by Mill rules and department expectations.
  • Use process knowledge to quickly troubleshoot the process as problems occur.
  • Coordinate recovery and utilities activities with other mill operating departments.


  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering with at least five years’ experience is required. 
  • The successful candidate should be familiar with boiler/recovery boiler processes, auxiliary systems, causticizing, evaporators, environmental (state/federal) regulations, and safety protocol. 
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office applications.
