Job Description

The General Accounting Manager will oversee the general accounting function including balance sheet integrity, payroll, wood accounting, capital & repair, budgeting/forecasting and internal controls. The position will have a supervisory role over payroll, billing and raw materials management.

General Ledger:

  • Postings — Verify all postings to G/L are accurate
  • Accruals — Manage accruals to guarantee necessity and accuracy 
  • Reporting of key financial metrics

Tax – Working with the corporate tax department: 

  • Be the resident expert on all tax related topics - sales and use, severance, property tax
  • Identify, apply and file for manufacturing investment credits 
  • Train others (purchasing) on proper taxation of purchases

Balance Sheet — Maintain all areas of the mill's balance sheet including but not limited to:

  • Balance sheet reconciliations – Coordinate the mill’s monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Understanding of balance sheet accounts — Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of how each balance sheet account is used and what the balance represents
  • Balance sheet reviews — Coordinate and facilitate a monthly balance sheet review with department management and a quarterly review with the Corporate Controller, as mandated by corporate policy
  • Controlling the balance sheet — Maintain control of the balance sheet by coordinating the posting of entries

Capital and Repair — Maintain all aspects of the mill's fixed asset system including but not limited to:

  • Construction in Progress – Work with the Engineering department to monitor capital investment projects to ensure proper charging, timely capitalization and timely project closure
  • Placing assets in service — All assets bought, built, or transferred into the mill will be placed in service and added to the fixed asset system in a timely manner
  • Retiring assets - All assets removed from service will be taken out of the fixed asset system in a timely manner
    Physical inventory of fixed assets - Develop, implement and maintain a plan to conduct physical inventories as prescribed by corporate policy
  • Depreciation - Calculate and record depreciation expense monthly
  • Leases - Ensure proper classification and tracking of leases

Internal Controls - Be the leader and expert to maintain location compliance with the mill and company internal control policies and procedures:

  • Audits/Peer Reviews: Coordinate and facilitate these reviews with the outside parties, assure that good rating is maintained for the mill's internal control environment and be the person of contact for all audits
  • Self-Reviews - Implement a process to assess the internal control environment and correct any perceived weaknesses 
  • Corporate policy- Develop and maintain expertise on corporate policy and how it applies to the mill
  • Sarbanes Oxley - Ensure the mill's continued compliance with Sarbanes Oxley

Wood Accounting – Support the fiber supply and chip mill teams with the following:

  • Monthly forecasting of wood deliveries and cost
  • Monthly reporting of costs and results
  • Annual budgeting
  • Ad hoc analysis 



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or bachelor’s degree with 24 hours accounting emphasis
  • 3+ years of G/L experience
  • Experience with SAP, SAGE
  • Strong MS Excel skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Perseverance to solve problems
  • Good communication skills
  • Excitement about learning new things 
  • Ability to lead 


  • Master’s degree
  • Professional certification - CPA or CMA
