Job Description

The Senior Papermaking Specialist provides leadership and management in all areas of number one (1) paper machine. This role is accountable for department goals relating to Safety, Quality, Cost, Environmental Compliance, and Production. The Area Manager is responsible for the performance of the operations personnel assigned to the area including supervisors. Assist with the effort to develop new grades for the mill complex. The ideal candidate will be technically oriented, detailed in approach, work well with people at all levels in the organization, and promotable to management positions in the company after building background and experience in our business.  This position reports to the Business Unit Manager – Coated Papers

Daily Accountabilities:

Directly accountable for the performance of the area and the Employees attached to the area in meeting goals for Safety, Quality, Cost, Environmental Compliance, and Production. Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and make decisions to meet daily production needs.  Specific duties are as follows:

  • Monitor and manage the development of the employees in the area.
  • Responsible for setting direction, identifying priorities, coordinating the activities of other departments as it relates to the area performance, and managing the operating budget for the area.
  • Addresses issues impacting performance expeditiously getting outside resources involved as needed.
  • Communicate to all levels of the organization as needed and participate with Area Managers from other areas of the mill to coordinate activities.
  • Administer policy and procedure within legal guidelines. Coach work group to adapt to new ways of performing work to include understanding of legal ramifications of our policies, government regulations and safety standards.
  • Manage costs by tracking costs using monthly reports. Provide input into projected plans. Conduct cost analysis. Use cost factors to effectively make sound decisions as well as identifying gaps.
  • Schedule work for the daily activities of the work groups to maximize available resources.
  • Participate in new product development.
  • Participate in coating trials aimed at improving quality and cost attributes of our sheet.


Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills. Clear expression of ideas in writing and in good grammatical form. Has the ability to actively listen and provide feedback to others.

Conflict Resolution:
Ability to resolve conflicts/disagreements in such a way to promote a win-win situation with the parties involved. Can hammer out tough agreements and settle disputes equitably. An advisor is very sensitive to the feelings of others as resolutions are collectively developed.

Possesses a genuine intent to foster the learning and development of work group members while promoting the creation of a high performance team. Able to lead work group toward an objective or goal while encouraging and empowering the work group to make decisions regarding flow of work through specified area. Understands one’s influence on the work group, and provides direction to work group to insure requirements are consistently met for the work area/facility. Motivates work group towards goal achievement by insuring that work group understands how their work fits into the entire production flow of the facility and by providing continuous feedback.

Able to effectively use these computer systems: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Demonstrate the ability to learn and understand systems such as Majiq, SAP, PI, etc. A strong Coating chemistry experience is preferred.

Must develop a positive working environment promoting open and honest communications and trust among work group members. Understands in order to provide continuous feedback to work group members, specific behaviors must be described in detail. Listen with the intent to understand the situation, shows empathy, and can express feelings in a very professional manner without offending work group members. Ensures production standards and policies are adhered to and counsels work group members accordingly should deviations exist. Partners with union leadership to work through employee issues.

Problem Solving:
Ability to understand a situation by breaking it into smaller pieces, organizing parts of problem in a systematic way, making systematic comparisons of different aspects or features, setting priorities on a rational basis, identifying time sequences, and casual relationships or other relationships, in order to generate solutions. Trains and leads work group in problem solving activities.

Change Orientation:
Ability to adapt to and work in a variety of situations to support the organizational goals. Appreciates new and different perspectives and has the willingness to align one’s own behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of Evergreen Packaging.

Ability to effectively forecast future production/operational demands and to insure a plan of action is developed to support the attainment of organizational goals. Involves assessing capabilities, identifying resources, setting and prioritizing objectives, and determining critical paths. Ensures resources are available for work group to produce on-time, quality work, in a safe manner.



  • Undergraduate degree from a State Board of Regents Accredited University
  • 5 to 7 years of leadership/supervision experience, preferred in the paper industry
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions and technical challenges.
  • Ability to build and manage a budget and schedule.
  • Good communication & computer skills in Microsoft Office, PI, Proficy, and other programs are a benefit.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization in a team setting.
  • Organized approach to work and ability to deal with multiple competing priorities to make appropriate decisions.
  • Able to convey a sense of urgency and drive to perform to the work group.


  • Technical degree that has application to the paper industry.
  • Experience managing people in a union environment.
  • High leadership potential with the ability and the desire to be promoted in the organization.
  • Experience (5 to 7 years) on a paper machine.
