Cedar Rapids, Iowa: On May 10th, Evergreen Packaging’s team of 8 employees participated in United Way’s Day of Caring by volunteering their time at the Wellington Heights’ neighborhood gardens and community house.
The residents of this neighborhood grow vegetables for harvesting (free of charge) by the local families. The house provides them with a gathering place for community meetings, programs and projects for children and adults.
Our team moved several raised garden beds to a better location, moved lots and lots of dirt and compost to fill the gardens, added about 30 of path with brick pavers around the gardens, planted the flower bed in front of the house, repaired and painted the porch railing and bench, and put up woodwork trim in the house.
The day included a lot of physical labor, but made for an enjoyable day knowing it will help a local neighborhood.
