Consumer trends around health and sustainability continue to impact the food and beverage industry, especially as they relate to consumer perceptions of responsibly packaged products. An influential segment of grocery shoppers is purchasing foods and beverages they believe are healthy for them, and are packaged in a manner that is good for the environment as well. Named Responsible Packaging Shoppers (RPS), these are a subset of all grocery shoppers who strongly agree/ agree that it is important to choose foods and beverages that are packaged responsibly. They are a growing part of the population that is thinking about the package in addition to the product. According to the 2018 EcoFocus Trend Study conducted by EcoFocus Worldwide, a growing consumer group is making purchasing decisions based on the packaging material, its perceived recyclability and corporate commitments to sustainability. They are carrying these attitudes into choices they make at quick serve restaurants, too.
